Egri Bikavér, as it’s known in Hungary, has got an illustrious past and could well have a magnificent future – that is, if the young winemakers who are re-discovering their Hungarian heritage and unique varieties can make their dreams come true. Egri Bikavér, internationally known as Bull’s Blood, is the traditional red wine of the north Hungarian appellation of Eger. Located between Budapest and Tokaj, the town of Eger is the site of the 16th century battle between the Hungarians and the Ottomans. Legend has it that the Hungarian victory was attributable to their drinking red wine that the Turks believed to be bull’s blood. Bolyki’s Egri Bikavér is an elegant wine made from the best lots in the cellar. The nose shows intense aromas: forest fruit, black cherries, volcanic-calcareous soil, tobacco. It is a balanced wine with medium-plus body, medium tannins, alcohol, round acidity and a persistent finish.
